Café Benatzky & Leopoldi serves up a very special musical blend. One is a piano humorist and entertainer, the other a highly successful author-composer for theater, operetta and film.
Leopoldi, forced to emigrate to America as a Jew, just as successful there as in his old homeland, loved and celebrated after his return to Austria until his death. Benatzky, responsible for many highly successful operettas, including Das Weiße Rössl, was present in many major European cities, left Europe out of disgust at the Nazi regime of the 1930s and to protect his Jewish lover, but was unable to gain a foothold in America, turned down offers from the UFA to work for German films from exile, returned after the war and was forgotten. Two lives, two fates, two careers compared! We remember great successes in a new musical guise. Klezmer, jazz and Viennese song combine to create a special blend. “Ach Luise”, “In der Barnabittengasse”, “Was hast du schon davon, wenn ich dich liebe”, “In einem kleinen Cafe in Hernals” and the like.
This musical delicacy is prepared by one of the best klezmer bands in the country and served by a head waiter with perfection, heart and dedication: Erwin Steinhauer!
