Media guerrilla Total Refusal presents “Sons and True Sons,” a live gaming lecture exploring the connections between toxic masculinity, meritocracy, and the storming of the U.S. Capitol in 2021. “Sons and True Sons” illuminates how the narrative of the video game “Tom Clancy’s: The Division 2” anticipated the events of January 6, 2021.…
Total Refusal discovers parallels between the game’s virtual narrative and actual anti-democracy groups. Inspired by these uncanny similarities, they storm the Capitol in Washington D.C. with their live gaming lecture. They playfully explore hyper-masculine self-empowerment inside and outside of gaming spaces and the narrative decay of liberal democracy.
