HEAST! presents:

– MAIIJA –

…powered by Platoo

Who is Marilies Jagsch? With the debut album I AM from her new project MAIIJA, the musician, who was once described by the press as “Austria’s most interesting voice in the indie sector”, provides us with an answer that raises many questions and explores the zeitgeist.

MAIIJA is more than Marilies Jagsch. MAIIJA are the many lyrical egos within us that are searching for expression. “I am not who you think I am. I could be anyone,” reads the accompanying text on the album. On the cover, a barely recognizable face. The self that presents itself here is interchangeable, it slips into different roles and takes on a different meaning depending on the perspective. The stories told on I AM take a look behind the scenes of the superficial representations that accompany our everyday lives. They are about how the demands of our performance-oriented society inscribe themselves on the individual, about the struggle against the structures we learn from an early age, about trying to break out of them, about failing ourselves and about how this failure affects our lives and our relationships with other people.

Together with producer Peter Paul Aufreiter (Hearts Hearts), Marilies Jagsch has tailored each of the eleven songs on I AM specifically to the arrangement it needs – sometimes sparsely orchestrated, sometimes growing organically into an intense sonority. The focus is always on her voice, which is either intimate or penetrating and militant.

Some of the most exciting musicians on the Viennese scene were invited to take part in the recording, including Lukas Lauermann (cello), Emily Stewart (violin, viola), Gernot Scheithauer (drums), Konstantin Jagsch (double bass), Markus Reiter and Manuel Riegler (guitar).

Press reviews:

Great things are on the horizon for September. Then the Austrian singer and songwriter Marilies Jagsch will reinvent herself under the alias MAIIJA.
-Andreas Rauschal, Wiener Zeitung

Marilies Jagsch 2.0. is called Maiija – as such, the former local indie great has now recorded an album of chamber music sophistication.
-Fritz Ostermayer, FM4

Marilies Jagsch is celebrating a big comeback as Maiija with her album “I Am”.
-Samir Köck, Die Presse

It was a new beginning for her, hence the new name, explains Marilies Jagsch, who after two highly acclaimed albums is now back as a solo musician after 13 years. The music on “l Am” sounds as atmospherically dense as back then, but more open and multi-layered, with Jagsch’s haunting voice – very beautiful.

Haunting pop music for adults
