It is the seven hundred and sixty million, eight hundred and thirty-nine thousandth anniversary of the creation of the world, but there is not exactly a celebratory mood in heaven. God no longer wants to know anything about people since there has been strife on earth and only “honor, glory and nation” are being shouted about. Peter and his angels receive an advertisement in the newspaper looking for a new, dear God for the world – preferably with immediate effect. He should be wise, just, omniscient and omnipotent and have a sovereign demeanor (“but not a leader type, please!”). This is why Peter, disguised as God, and two of his angels are sent to earth, where a colorful game of mistaken identity soon unfolds.

“Before the outbreak of the next world war” – this is how Maria Lazar titles the time of the stage action. Against the backdrop of an impending war, heaven, hell and humanity haggle over strategies and means to avert it. As the devil puts it: “True democracy negotiates with everyone, with God and with the devil.” A view that shakes the foundations of the democratic order and has lost none of its topicality.

After “Der Nebel von Dybern” last season, we are continuing our exploration of Maria Lazar with “Die Hölle auf Erden”. As part of our canon expansion program, we are presenting another play by the successfully rediscovered Austrian playwright that has been forgotten to this day. Lazar describes her play as a comedy – with her evil view of the world, the laughter gets stuck in your throat.

The fact that she wrote this play in the 1930s makes her an extremely clear-sighted and critical observer of her time. The fact that she wrote it with the means of satire, which even today aims precisely at the heart of the current political situation, makes Maria Lazar a brilliant playwright who is still too little known.
