Giuseppe Verdi’s choral opera ”NABUCCO” already fascinated audiences on its premiere evening on March 9, 1842 at the TEATRO alla SCALA in Milan.
This enormous success has accompanied all Nabucco performances to this day, regardless of the staging. After 175 years, the opera is more relevant than ever. MARCEL PRAWY, the Austrian opera legend once said: ”This blockbuster of opera history must be performed again and again. This opera has the power of a young god and the audience is transported into a state of trance, full of hope for a better world, at the latest during the prisoners’ or freedom chorus called ”Va pensiero sull’ali dorate- Fly, thought, on golden wings”. What is the secret of this success story?
This opera exudes a unique symbolic power. This was also the view of the great VERDI, who, like many of his contemporaries, wished for an Italy liberated from the foreign yoke and united.
And the opera’s plot provides an ideal template for this. Two storylines are intertwined: On the one hand, it is the story of the JEWS, ISRAELITES and LEVITES who want to free themselves from Babylonian rule; on the other hand, the Babylonian king Nabucco proclaims himself a god, goes mad, is put out of his mind by his daughter Abigaile and yet is purified in the end, purified by the god of the JEWS?
Can faith be a solution in the end, e.g. for lasting peace? The opera ensemble ”Opera Italiana” is accompanied by the renowned conductor, Maestro GIORGIO CROCI, who has a proven track record at the Arena di Verona.
