Kevin Barz / Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe [Deutschland]
Performance

75 minutes

Riccardo Pallotta is an actor at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. But he is also Constantin Schreiber, narrator of Germany’s most important news program, Tagesschau. With the help of deep fakes and artificial intelligence, he cheats his way onto the show, which has almost 10 million viewers every evening.

There is a lot to learn here: Climate change, war in the Middle East, imperial machismo in Europe and Western complacency about prosperity do not exactly make us look to the future with confidence. Sometimes you don’t even want to turn on the news any more, there are too many doomsday scenarios bombarding us. But what if the person behind the screen, always looking so serious, only had nice things to tell us? At least for a single program?

Deepfakes create seemingly real images of Taylor Swift and the Pope, steal truths and elections. Why don’t we use this technique of digital deception to build our own truth? An attempt to deceive Germany’s most reputable news format, in which the audience takes on the role of accomplices live in the hall and creates a different reality every evening. A plea for lies!
