Information
More detailsThere is discontent in the fairy kingdom: too many people have fallen prey to the evil spirit Lumpazivagabundus, who seduces them into laziness and irrationality. The love fairy Amorosa is the only one who can counter him. Fortuna, the fairy godmother, is not going to take this lying down and makes a bet: she claims that she can put at least two out of three dissolute craftsmen back on the right track with the help of a big lottery win. …
With witty language and situation comedy, Nestroy’s successful play revolves around big life questions: how can a happy life be led in a crisis-ridden world? At a time when fears about the future are once again the order of the day, director Matthias Rippert and his team turn the play into a farce about the struggle for the right life plan. In this way, the production brings Nestroy into the present day – with a clear stance and its own tone for the three craftsmen’s search for happiness: it takes Nestroy’s genre description “magic farce” at its word and places the fairy competition at the center of the action. The fairies slip into the roles of humans whom the three craftsmen encounter and try to decide the outcome of the bet in their favor through increasingly wild manipulations. It remains to be seen who will win in the end.
The Graz-based author, director and actress Pia Hierzegger (Theater im Bahnhof) has written new couplets for the production, which take a close look at the inner lives of the characters with subtle irony – and comment on current affairs with satirical accuracy.
