– PHILIPP HOCHMAIR, THE ELECTRIC HAND OF GOD & KURT RAZELLI –
Philipp Hochmair is Jedermann. In a passionate tour de force, he slips into all the roles and turns Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s play into a polyphonic monologue. A dialog with two microphones. One for Jedermann and one for the others. His Jedermann is a rock star. Driven by guitar riffs and experimental sounds from the band Die Elektrohand Gottes and Kurt Razelli, Philipp Hochmair transforms the 100-year-old mystery play into an apocalyptic spoken word concert. …
“The Story of the Rich Man’s Life and Death” becomes a haunting overall experience and makes everyone recognizable as a contemporary who burns out in his insatiable greed for money and intoxication. The theme is timeless and eternally valid: “What is left of my life when it comes to dying?”
Started as an experiment at Hamburg’s Thalia Theater in 2013, he and his band, “Die Elektrohand Gottes”, have been developing the performance ever since. Work in progress. Spontaneous guest appearances such as those by Patricia Aulitzky, Ulrike Beimpold or Johannes Silberschneider underline the idea of the jam session and open up the concept of the monological structure time and again. Highlights of the debate were the performances at Vienna’s Burgtheater and the benefit concert at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the fall of 2018.
“My first encounter with Jedermann in Salzburg as a young spectator was disappointing. The event character remained alien to me. I remained alone with my questions, with the enigma of Jedermann. This irritation led to the desire to turn the ponderous theatrical spectacle into a light-footed monologue. In 2013, I met Tobias Herzz Hallbauer through his Alexander Moissi project and founded the band ‘Die Elektrohand Gottes’. We wanted to create a special listening experience to get even closer to everyone’s thoughts and feelings. Also to the poetry, to the sound, to this special language. The result is an intimate insight, a journey into Jedermann’s head. And while Hofmannsthal wanted to make the present visible in the past, our interpretation brings out the ephemeral in the present with the provocative attitude of a rock concert.” (Philipp Hochmair)
Many years of intensive study of Hofmannsthal’s original text enabled Philipp Hochmair to stand in overnight for Tobias Moretti, who was taken ill, in the summer of 2018 and – to unanimous acclaim from the press and audience – take on the role of ‘Jedermann’ at the Salzburg Festival.
In summer 2024, Philipp Hochmair celebrated a celebrated “Jedermann Comeback” – again in the leading role – on the Domplatz and also laid the foundation for the upcoming concerts with “Jedermann Reloaded 2.0” at Burg Clam on August 9, 2024.
