Because, unlike many of her colleagues, she does not expect an inheritance, journalist Dena has clarified her priorities: money first, self-realization second. This is why she is as unscrupulous as she is successful in her columns and talk shows, stirring up trouble against “left-wing identity politics”. With every shitstorm she provokes, her own market value increases and since she has successfully suppressed all moral concerns, she can enjoy her life to the full. But then food delivery man Davide dies in her apartment – just a few breaths after delivering the sushi she ordered. Unfortunately, Dena’s secret stash of cash is accidentally taken away with the body, forcing Dena and her pathologically honest assistant Luigi to follow the dead man. They soon encounter two shady brothers and unintentionally gain deep insights into their ice-cold business of social burial. Because if there is no money for the funeral, the funeral discounter takes over on behalf of the state: “As cheap as possible, as dignified as necessary.”

With “Rabatt”, playwright Nora Abdel-Maksoud takes aim at a classism that persists into the afterlife with as much relish as tact and irreverence. With her unique blend of acerbic humor and astute social analysis, she is an indispensable voice in contemporary German-language drama. Now, under the direction of Basil Zecchinel, a play by this internationally successful author will be performed in Graz for the first time.
