Two young couples head over heels in love, a bet on fidelity, an experiment!
Director Barbara-David Brüesch transports one of Mozart’s most famous operas into the present day and questions the piece’s topicality. The musical director is Dinis Sousa, whose conducting of Berlioz’
Les Troyens caused a sensation at the 2023 Salzburg Festival.

It’s a bold thesis that Don Alfonso puts forward: Supposedly, no woman can be faithful. Guglielmo and Ferrando are outraged, as
they are absolutely certain that their partners Fiordiligi and Dorabella will remain faithful. Without hesitation, they embark on an experiment: a fictitious test of fidelity with all kinds of madness, disguises and confusion. Initially light-hearted and humorous, the game comes to a head and, despite a superficially happy ending, leads to profound emotional wounds and an irreversible gain in knowledge for the couple.

The creation of Così fan tutte, Mozart’s third congenial collaboration with the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, is due to Emperor Joseph II at
, who commissioned the composition. The dramma giocoso is based on a story which, although it falls into the realm of legend
, nevertheless held up a mirror to society at the time. It was said that the story of the exchange of partners had actually taken place shortly beforehand at a Viennese carnival ball.

Moral smoothing and misinterpretations determined the reception of the work in the
19th and 20th centuries. Finally perceived in its true grandeur and significance, Così fan tutte became one of the most frequently performed operas of all time. With musical mastery, Mozart subverts the questionable test of fidelity and paints a great portrait of the soul that reveals the depth of real emotions.
