20 years of Jazzwerkstatt Graz: Anniversary at the Orpheum Extra
The Jazzwerkstatt Graz has been an integral part of the local music scene for two decades. What once began as an initiative of committed musicians has developed into a platform for contemporary jazz, improvisation and stylistic border crossings. Now the 20th anniversary is being celebrated at the Orpheum Extra – with concerts, discussions and an intergenerational finale. …
To kick things off, a prominent panel will look back at the beginnings and discuss how the festival has positioned itself in the Styrian cultural landscape – and where the journey could take it. Founders, long-standing directors and experts will have their say, as will representatives of the current generation.
Musically, the Jazzwerkstatt is as diverse as ever: the 9-piece Graz-based soul formation Planet Yoni brings energetic groove to the stage with a large brass section, several female singers and a clear queer-feminist attitude. With “Radio FS2”, the brother duo Supancic&Supancic stage a tongue-in-cheek homage to cultural radio broadcasts – between composition, improvisation and word art.
The Tim Scherer Trio focuses on lyrical sound spaces and finely balanced dynamics, while Chris Smith Jazz Grunge dresses familiar sounds from the 1990s in a modern jazz guise. Guitarist Martin Iaies brings international flair, combining South American influences with European jazz tradition. The Viennese trio slowklang, on the other hand, explores unusual soundscapes between song form and free improvisation with voice, saxophone and electric bass.
On the last evening, another panel discussion will be dedicated to career prospects after studying music – a topic that concerns many young artists.
The Jazzwerkstatt Collective will then provide the musical finale: founders, influential personalities from the past 20 years and the current organizing team will perform together on stage. At the same time, festival director Katharina Maier is bid farewell – an emotional moment during an evening that connects the past and the future.
With this anniversary edition, Jazzwerkstatt Graz once again underlines its claim to present jazz as a lively, open and socially relevant art form – in the heart of Graz.
