Horváth, whose 125th birthday will be commemorated in 2026, wrote about “ordinary people” facing existential threats during a time of rising fascism. His powerful play depicts a society marked by narrow-mindedness, malice, and prejudice. Economic and political instability intensify mutual distrust and lay the groundwork for rumors and incitement. In this climate of uncertainty, the web of culpability continues to spread.
Director David Bösch explores the question of individual responsibility within society and brings Horváth’s examination of guilt and conscience to the stage through finely nuanced character portrayals. The almost crime-thriller-like atmosphere reveals the dynamics of opinion formation and reflects the danger inherent in blind and blind-fury reactions—a danger that threatens both individuals and entire societies.
