Kafana Beisl Culture Clash
Kafana Beisl Culture Clash

Information
More detailsAustria, 1975: Bane and Jana have left their homeland in Yugoslavia behind and opened a kafana* in Styria, a place brought to life by rock music, a handful of guest workers, and family conflicts.
When an official letter announces the demolition of Bane’s pub, both the family who run the place and the patrons are in an uproar. Lawyer Martha comes up with a solution: the Kafana could become a Yugoslav cultural association. Initial skepticism gives way to a drive to take action—can the family and guests, despite their differences, pull together to save the Kafana from demolition? …
Drawing on his own background, musician, director, and writer Sandy Lopičić explores the themes of arriving and wanting to leave. Written specifically for the ensemble of the Schauspielhaus Graz, this comedy delightfully turns traditions and stereotypes on their head: Suddenly, the rock ’n’ roll that has long dominated the Kafana finds itself competing with Balkan folk music. Through constant shifts in perspective and a search for his own (musical) roots, Lopičić, together with his four-piece band and eight actors, brings to life on stage a musical spectrum ranging from 1970s rock to Balkan songs.
