Or will have lost something. The keys to our bicycles, patience with our neighbors, middle-class status, savings, peace, love, democracy, hope. For decades, we have carefully swept one loss after another under the doormat so that we can continue to move forward fearlessly and keep telling ourselves that progress is what defines us.But it’s too hard! And that’s when others stood up, declared a loss, and we realized: we also have something that’s missing, something that we deserve! Away with the thick doormat!…
The Grand Hotel Steirerhof on Jakominiplatz once promised the splendor of the new world. Politicians and celebrities came and went, the first draught beer in Graz was served here – everything shone and shouted: Things are looking up here. Until it was replaced by a shopping center in 1989.
Director and author Rebekka David goes to a place where the theme of loss has been inscribed. Regular guests and employees of the Grand Hotel and, just a leap in time away, their children, the investors and managers of the new Steirerhof, ask: Do we need collective rituals to digest all the repressed losses? Can we imagine a future without progress? An evening for big and small losers and all those who want to become one!
