Information
More detailsHudetz, the stationmaster, is known for his reliability, but then he misses the crucial moment for a signal because the innkeeper’s daughter Anna distracts him. Two trains collide and eighteen passengers die. Anna and Hudetz try to avert suspicion by making false statements. In the town, the train crash becomes the starting point for all kinds of suspicions and accusations. …
Horváth, whose 125th birthday is in 2026, wrote about “little people” in an existentially threatening situation at a time when fascism was gaining strength. His haunting play depicts a society characterized by narrowness, malice and reservations. Economic and political instability increase mutual mistrust and prepare the ground for rumors and incitement. In this climate of uncertainty, the web of culpable connections spreads ever wider.
Director David Bösch explores the question of the responsibility of the individual within society and brings Horváth’s examination of guilt and conscience to the stage in a finely psychological characterization. The almost thriller-like atmosphere reveals the dynamics of opinion-forming and reflects the danger that blind and blindly reckless reactions pose to both individuals and entire societies.
