More detailsMajor Tellheim returns from the war: wounded, penniless and dishonorably discharged due to accusations of corruption. Deeply wounded in his pride, he believes he is no longer worthy of the love of his wealthy fiancée Minna. But she and her ally Franziska are already on their way to him. When the two women happen to stop off at the same hotel as Tellheim, a happy ending initially seems unattainable. Their views on the requirements for a relationship at eye level are too different. An entertaining game of confusion unfolds in which Minna Tellheim is always one step ahead.…
Lessing places his characters in a world in upheaval, in which structures and identities have to be renegotiated. With their clear values and principles, Minna and Tellheim are drawn as individuals and appear endearing to each other precisely because of this – but as overly rigid maxims, they also have a divisive force. Eloquent and stubborn, the two struggle for their self-determination and yet are desperate to come together.
Ulrike Arnold and her team, who successfully staged Nestroy’s “Der Zerrissene” last season, explore the cost and value of one’s own autonomy and thus happiness in this comedy.
