It is a love as passionate as it is destructive between Heathcliff, a black man who was taken in as a foundling at the estate known as “Wuthering Heights,” and Catherine, who grows up as his sister. Catherine’s brother Hindley terrorizes Heathcliff and makes his life a living hell with his humiliations. When the adult Catherine decides to marry into the neighboring wealthy family to escape her origins, Heathcliff disappears overnight and returns years later, filled with hatred and a secret plan. Brontë plays out the cycle of love, oppression, violence, and revenge across several generations, much like in a Greek tragedy. Like revenants, the children’s children—significantly named by the author with the same first names—carry the traumas of their parents’ generation within them. …
Emily Brontë’s only novel, which she initially published under a male pseudonym, received scathing reviews in the Victorian era. It has since long since become part of the literary canon and, from Kate Bush’s famous song to countless film adaptations, is now an integral part of popular culture. Yet all adaptations tell only the first half of the book, focusing on the romantic love story. The second, furious part—which also makes Brontë’s story a reckoning with classism and a document of racist experience—is simply omitted.
