Édouard Louis is one of the most important voices in contemporary European literature. In his autobiographical novels, he recounts growing up in a working-class family, poverty, a lack of educational opportunities, and a relationship with his father marked by violence—as well as a mother who herself suffers from their social circumstances. With linguistic precision and emotional depth, Louis explores queer identity at the intersection of social exclusion, shame, and self-assertion. His keen observations reveal how background, education, gender, and sexual orientation shape lives—and how fraught the journey can be to ultimately free oneself from such labels. …
In his third production at the Schauspielhaus Graz, director Jakab Tarnóczi, together with his creative team, focuses on Louis’s radically personal self-assessment: The novel *Anleitung ein anderer zu werden* serves as the starting point for a narrative about self-definition, ruptures, and transformation. In it, Tarnóczi explores conflicts, ambivalences, and uncertainties, and also incorporates those novels in which Louis focuses on other family members. The stage adaptation traces how identity emerges, how change becomes possible—and what freedom and power this unleashes.
