Information
More detailsHigh above Crete, Icarus dares to dream of freedom—a flight caught between an irrepressible thirst for adventure and impending doom. The ancient myth, in which Icarus flies too close to the sun, serves as the starting point for this dance piece by Crete-born choreographer Andonis Foniadakis. It tells of longing and transgression, of the quest for weightlessness and human hubris. An intense, poetic interplay of risk, intoxication, and transience.
Andonis Foniadakis captures the essence of the narrative and blends his distinctive movement language with elements of traditional Cretan dance. Driven by the question of how far one can go without failing, he creates a powerful, expansive choreography that seems to suspend time and gravity for a moment. It becomes a breathless reminder of how close freedom and danger lie to one another. …
“I follow the characters’ energy, their emotions, their state of mind, and their physical and mental condition. What fear accompanies them as they flee? What excitement do they feel as they climb? And how devastating must it feel to fail? I try to translate all these sensations into movement,” says Foniadakis about his work. He is now restaging his internationally acclaimed hit production, which premiered in Hanover, with the dancers of Ballett Graz.
