Nina Proll & Trio de Salón: "Lieder eines armen Mädchens“

Nina Proll presents a staged recital that brings to life the story of a fictional singer from the 1920s: After achieving success on the cabaret stages of her homeland, she flees to the United States via Paris in the late 1930s. A new continent, a new life, an attempt to gain a foothold—both artistically and personally.
The evening features musical numbers by exiled composers who went on to have illustrious careers in America: Friedrich Hollaender, Hanns Eisler, Kurt Weill, and Hermann Leopoldi, newly arranged for this unusual instrumental ensemble by Gerrit Wunder. The lyrics are by greats such as Bertolt Brecht, Georg Kaiser, and Robert Liebman.
“If I Could Make a Wish,” sings the Diseuse, shines as “The Hunger Artist,” performs “The Saga of Jenny,” and has “Three Wishes.” In between, excerpts from Friedrich Hollaender’s biography “Von Kopf bis Fuß” transport us to the interwar period, telling the story of a homeless artist’s life with humor and simple poignancy.
