“I want to find out more about Dele—that is, Adele Kurzweil. Today she would be… 101. Her birthday would have been on January 31. So: She could have been. Then she’d be a really old woman. She’d tell her own story, what she went through. And how she survived. But—when I think of Dele, I don’t picture her as old. But young. Just as I met her in Auvillar…”

Lest We Forget. In 1938, 13-year-old Adele Kurzweil and her parents were forced to pack their bags, leave their home in Graz, and flee from the Nazis, without knowing when—or if—they would ever return. Their flight took the family all the way to southern France, where their suitcases were discovered decades later in an attic—they had accompanied the family on their journeys, except for the final leg, which led them to the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1942, to their deaths. Four years lie between Adele’s departure and these suitcases. Four years of flight, fear, hope, and uncertainty.
Commissioned by Next Liberty and based on the research Manfred Theisen conducted for his young adult novel of the same name, a powerful and timely play was created in 2020 about an important chapter in Graz’s (city) history, in which a young woman tries to remember something she herself did not experience, but which concerns us all—more than ever.
