Frühere Verhältnisse | Von nun an ging’s bergab

In “Frühere Verhältnisse”, Johann Nestroy exposes the mendacious double standards of his characters, who all try to cover up their past in order to look better to each other and gain as much benefit as possible from their relationships. They all sweep under the carpet what doesn’t fit into the picture they have painted of themselves.

Austrian director Ruth Brauer-Kvam stages Nestroy’s one-act play as a thoroughly musical evening – with Graz-based musician deeLinde at her side. She interweaves the play with songs by Hildegard Knef, allowing the master of old Viennese folk theater to meet the work of the legendary chanson singer. To the unmistakable style of Knef’s songs, the arrogance of Nestroy’s characters is seriously shaken. After the social ascent, the fall threatens: from now on it’s all downhill!
