The darkest period of modern history is the focus of this play commissioned by Next Liberty: in 1938, 13-year-old Adele Kurzweil and her parents had to pack their bags, leave their home in Graz and flee from the Nazis, not knowing when or even if they would return. Their escape took the family as far as the south of France, where their suitcases were only discovered decades later in an attic – they accompanied the family on their journeys, except for the last stage, which took them to the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1942, to their deaths. Four years lie between Adele’s departure and these suitcases. Four years of flight, fear, hope and uncertainty.

Quote:
“There was a girl my age with a suitcase just like mine.”

Is it possible to remember something that you did not experience yourself? In the conviction that memory not only serves as a guide for the present, but also for future action, this haunting and moving plea against forgetting can be experienced again on the Next Liberty stage from fall 2025.

Tip: “GehDenkMal – An interactive audio walk through Graz between then and now”

Who was Adele Kurzweil? This young girl who lived here in Graz until she had to flee from the Nazis with her parents in 1938? What was it like to have to pack your bags, say goodbye, set off into the unknown and not know when or if you would return?

Based on these thoughts and the stumbling stones laid in memory of the Kurzweil family in Schröttergasse (Geidorf), our new multimedia, interactive station walk “GehDenkMal” offers all interested parties the opportunity via the free “Actionbound” app, to “tackle” an approximately 1.5-hour interactive search for clues through Graz via smartphone, learn more about Adele Kurzweil, tackle pressing questions and tasks, collect puzzle pieces yourself, research and (among other things) and (among other things) ask the historian you trust in order to get an (acoustic) picture of what Adele’s Graz might have looked and felt like, how the political situation came to a head, changed everyday life and – as in the case of the Kurzweils – made it impossible. And how much this past has to do with our present.
