Wassily Kandinsky believed that colors sound and forms move – that the abstract has its own inner power that can be felt immediately. What happens when this idea reaches the body? When a circle is not drawn but walked, a diagonal not painted but stretched?
In Forms in Motion , the dancers of “Community Dance” at Graz Opera translate precisely this question into dance. It is not just forms that enter into a relationship with each other, but people: Some seek closeness and do not find it, some evade it, some impose themselves, some miss each other – and some, very slowly, find a connection that suits them. Movement makes visible what would otherwise remain invisible. Just like Kandinsky, who went from unconnected, restless elements to a harmony of forms, lines and energies, this piece also undertakes a journey: from chaos to composition. …
Every season, Oper Graz offers all people aged 15 and over who enjoy dance and movement the opportunity to take part in the dance education format “Community Dance”. In weekly rehearsals, people dance together, improvise and develop their own movement language, from which a dance piece is created that is then performed on stage. The intergenerational and barrier-free approach allows people with different backgrounds and physical abilities to come into contact with each other and use dance as a language that overcomes barriers and creates community. With the intention of making dance as accessible as possible, it is a basic premise for the joint directors of the format, dance mediator Mattia Scassellati and dancer from Ballett Graz Giulio Panzi, that no previous dance experience should be required.
