– “About Shostakovich – Dialogue between Dmitri Shostakovich and an unknown woman” –
Dmitri Shostakovich is sitting in front of a chessboard, lost in thought and absent-minded. A stranger appears and suddenly asks him: “Fancy a game?” During this game of chess, the stranger begins a conversation that becomes increasingly mysterious. Who is this woman? Where is she from? How does she know all the intimate details of Shostakovich’s life? With her increasingly relentless questions, she reminds Shostakovich more and more of his former love, his musical conscience, his pupil, the composer Galina Ivanovna Ustvolskaya. Did she set the unknown woman on him? A late revenge? …
The questions of the unknown are those that have occupied him for years and that Galina Ivanovna had already asked him: How would his life have turned out if he had kept his distance from politics in his youth? Was he really a state artist loyal to the regime and conformist? Was his joining the party really inevitable? Had he lost himself as a composer? Shostakovich is transfixed. Unable to finish the conversation, Shostakovich begins to justify himself.
But suddenly he realizes that he is alone. Where has the stranger disappeared to? All the chess pieces lie in front of Shostakovich as if no one had ever sat at his table. The stranger has vanished into thin air and with her the chair. Did Shostakovich end up talking to himself? With his own conscience? And did he checkmate himself?
