What does it mean today to belong to Europe? Who is allowed to be “from here”—and who is not?
In her commissioned work “фielföлkaŠtát,” author Ewe Benbenek intertwines the history of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy with contemporary issues of labor, migration, and belonging. The text takes a multilingual journey through history, giving voice to characters from operettas, striking workers, and folk songs. They all encounter a traveler journeying through Graz, Vienna, Bratislava, Krakow, and Budapest, observing Europe’s political and social tensions. Along the way, she engages in a dialogue with her father via text message. …
Between the Times unfolds a multifaceted perspective on class relations, upward social mobility, minority politics, and experiences of exclusion. Language itself plays a special role: sounds and letters from the Cyrillic, Arabic, and Latin alphabets interact with one another, making hidden connections audible.
“фielföлkaŠtát” explores the limits and possibilities of European identity—and, amid historical ruptures and contemporary conflicts, seeks out moments of closeness, hope, and solidarity.
Following *Chronicle of Ongoing Derailments* in the 2024/25 season, director Marie Bues once again tackles a political theme. At a time when European nations are increasingly invoking nationalist narratives, the team is deliberately working with cross-border perspectives: In this co-production, actors from the ensembles in Graz, Vienna, and Budapest will perform the play in German and Hungarian.
