“Where there is much light, there is also much shadow.” This quote from Goethe’s *Götz von Berlichingen* could all too easily be applied to his tormented Doctor Faust: Having spent his entire life striving to acquire knowledge and insight, he despairs in his old age at his own lofty expectations and the feeling that he will never truly be able to discover what “holds the world together at its core.” He curses reason and science and is more than ready to follow his grand words with wild deeds, even to take his own life, when the devilishly alluring Mephistopheles appears and invites Faust to switch to the “dark side of the force”— —for no less a price than his soul and at the expense of many others. …
