It all starts with a scandal: During a political meeting with diplomats, the president made an inappropriate remark and let slip a sexist comment about his wife, Margaret. Social media and political allies are up in arms, and journalists are swarming the press secretary’s office. Of course, it’s not the president himself who handles the PR disaster, but his inner circle—all women with extensive expertise and an even heavier workload. The man stands at the center of power; his female staff members are at the center of the action. With *The Shadow Presidents*, Selina Fillinger has created a comedy that is as funny as it is political, one that captures the spirit of the times surrounding the themes of power, gender roles, and worldview. Following his successful production of “Minihorror” at the Schauraum , director Branko Janack is staging a play at the Schauspielhaus for the first time , bringing Fillingers’ comedy to its Austrian premiere with exuberant enthusiasm. To this end, he has produced a new translation of the Broadway hit and plunges the characters into the madness of political PR strategies that bend the truth until it snaps.
