In 1977, the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes launched on their mission into space. Attached to the outer hulls of each probe was a record-like object: the “Voyager Golden Records.” Intended as a message to extraterrestrials, they are meant to provide insight into life on our planet and human culture. Each record contains 116 images, 27 musical pieces, various sounds, and friendly greetings in 55 languages. Mozart’s “Aria of the Queen of the Night” follows the croaking of frogs, Peruvian wedding songs follow Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” Along with images from the supermarket, of mountain climbing, of the UN headquarters, and the Great Wall of China. The collection is fascinating, yet upon viewing it, it also becomes clear that the multifaceted life of our planet cannot possibly be squeezed onto a single data carrier. Of course, the selection is always arbitrary and reveals at least as much about the people who made it as it does about humanity in general. There simply is no single canon that represents us all. …
2027 marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Voyager spacecraft. To commemorate this occasion, director Ruth Brauer-Kvam is collaborating with the ensemble to create a staged song recital that takes on the strange yet touching “mixtape” from planet Earth. As the last instruments on board are slowly shut down and the space probes are left to drift eternally into the unknown, we ask ourselves on stage what a concert for extraterrestrials might actually sound like. Which songs absolutely must be included? And have the Golden Records perhaps already been found?
